The Perfect Bridal Smile

By Flora Chigwedere

The wedding season has started. Whenever I meet up with my girlfriends, all conversations are directed towards the following topics – the special outfit, the latest hair-up style, hen parties, jewellery. Real girlie talk, and more so now, as one of our best friends recently tied the knot. And over the past few months, everything was about the Royal Wedding – predictions on what Kate's dress would be like, debates on whether she should wear her hair up or down, THAT ring. And then, of course, there was big speculation about her teeth. Has she had the Invisalign treatment? Has she had her teeth whitened?

Kate had the most radiant smile on her wedding day. It is what I would call the Perfect Bridal Smile! The smile adds to the beauty of the bride, as we all saw with Kate.

So if you are a bride to be, here is some advice on the treatments available to you, so you too can have the Perfect Bridal Smile.

Which type of bride are you?

Miss Super Organised

18 months till your big day! You have allowed me plenty of time to get you that perfect Bridal Smile. So what can I do for you?

Consultation and Hygiene:

A full in depth consultation with the Dentist is always advised. At this consultation, I will assess your teeth and gums. In the event you require any restorative dental treatment, this will allow me to provide the dental treatment at a leisurely pace. The correct number of hygiene sessions would be recommended to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy for your big day, and this above all else, is paramount.

If achieving the Perfect Bridal Smile involves straightening the teeth, the extra time will allow for all options of orthodontic treatment as a possibility. The orthodontic treatment required will depend on your treatment needs and how much tooth movement is required. If you need complex orthodontic treatment, 18 months is perfect.

We will discuss the orthodontic option which is best suited for you and your treatment needs.

Options for Orthodontic treatment vary from:

  • Invisalign: a clear almost invisible brace is used to move the teeth
  • Ceramic Braces: clear tooth coloured ceramic braces are used to move the teeth
  • Lingual braces: the brace is placed on the inside of the tooth, and hence is not visible at all

Depending on the treatment chosen, and degree of movement required, orthodontic treatment can take 4-18 months, sometimes more.

If you have any missing teeth the longer length of time will allow for other advanced treatments such as implants to be discussed. This treatment involves using a titanium screw to hold a new false tooth.

The treatment, involving any treatment planning , can take anything from 3 – 9 months.

Advanced Gum Treatment:

If you have a history of gum disease, treatment with a Periodontist may be advised. This will help the gums to heal prior to any other dental treatments being carried out.

Your gums may need some form of contouring to reshape your smile, this treatment is called crown lengthening and carried out by the Periodontist. This treatment can be done prior to veneer treatment being carried out on the front teeth.

The periodontal treatment can take anything from 3 to 9 months in order to achieve the best results, but as it is normally followed by other dental treatment, it is best in the 18 month category.

Miss Organised

12 months till your big day! 12 months is still a good time frame to allow dental treatment to be carried out, depending on your treatment needs.

Consultation and Hygiene:

As mentioned above, I would do the full examination to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy.

If you wish to straighten your teeth and the orthodontic treatment required is not too complex, then you will be safe for time. This will depend on how much movement your teeth will require. All the same options as mentioned above are all still viable options

Veneers and Crowns:

If you would like to consider veneers and crowns as an option for the Perfect Bridal Smile, 12 months is a good time frame to allow. We would start off by taking moulds and pictures of your teeth. We would prepare diagnostic models of your teeth, and use computer generated images to predict how your teeth would look following treatment. This is perfect as it allows us to discuss the treatment options and constraints, allowing your input, hence involving you in the treatment planning stage.

This treatment can take anything from 6 to 9 months, especially if any gum contouring is required, as mentioned in the above section.

Miss Not Long To Go Now

1 to 3 months till your big day! We have just enough time to do a few bits for you.

Consultation and Hygiene:

As mentioned above, I would carry out your full examination and consultation, and more importantly, carry out any essential restorative work such as fillings and hygiene.

Three months is a little late in the day for the bigger treatments such as orthodontics. We would be able to treat only the very simple cases, but we would be very restricted by time.

Veneers and Crowns:

You may still be able to have other treatments such as veneers and crowns, depending on the extent of the treatment required and how much planning would be needed.

Teeth Whitening:

If you have healthy teeth and gums and do not feel your teeth need straightening, then you are a perfect candidate for Teeth Whitening.

There are two types of whitening available to you

  1. Laser Teeth Whitening, which is whitening done in the office and allows instant results. This treatment would take roughly one hour in the surgery.
  2. Take Home Whitening, which involves having bespoke custom made trays for you. You would wear the trays everyday for a two week period. The best thing about this treatment is you have more control over how light your teeth go. This treatment takes 2 weeks. If after two weeks, you would like your teeth to be lighter than the result achieved after two weeks of treatment, then you are able to continue for another one week, possibly even two. We would need to discuss this.
  3. Combination Whitening Treatment: I find this treatment provides the best results as we use a combination of the two above techniques. This treatment would take one hour in the surgery followed by two weeks of teeth whitening.

If you have any fillings or crowns on your front teeth, you would need to allow for the extra time to have these fillings replaced after your whitening treatment, as the whitening treatment will not change the colour of these restorations.

Miss Last Minute.Com

2 days till your big day! Yep, it does happen. Teeth were at the bottom of your 'Bridal to do list'. But it is my duty to make sure you have that Perfect Bridal Smile for your big day, so deliver I will! It is not impossible, as long as you have healthy teeth.

Consultation and Hygiene:

An examination and consultation would be conducted first of all.

Followed by a hygiene session to make sure your gums are healthy. For some brides-to-be, that's all they want! A simple hygiene for nice pink gums and fresh breath does make a big difference.

Diamond Sparkle Hygiene polish:

This treatment is like a deep clean. We use a diamond high gloss polishes which leaves the teeth nice and sparkly clean. The treatment takes 40 minutes.

Laser Teeth Whitening:

The only other thing I could do for this Bride-to-be is the Laser Teeth Whitening. We would not be enough time for the take home teeth whitening. The laser treatment takes one hour in the surgery.

In most instances, we manage to achieve the Perfect Bridal Smile. It's all about how you envisage your smile as a bride and all in all, what will make you feel beautiful and confident on your special day!

So, ladies, if he has proposed, please allow plenty of time for us to ensure you have that Perfect Bridal Smile, and try not to have teeth at the bottom on your bridal-to-do list!
